Heritages and Museums

The Currency Museum of Korea is the first museum in Korea to be dedicated solely to modern and ancient currencies. The museum is operated by the Mint Corporation of Korea as part of its non-profit public services and is open to visitors free of charge with a view of increasing public knowledge of the nation’s currency. The museum features a total of 120,000 pieces including: coins currently in use both in Korea and overseas; coins from modern times; 80 types of commemorative coins; etc.

The Geological Museum located in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon-si, is the nation’s first comprehensive museum dedicated to geology. The museum (est. 2001) boasts an architectural design inspired by the breastplate of a Stegosaurus and is divided into a main hall, 2 exhibition rooms, a show room, an outdoor exhibition area, and a special exhibition hall. The Main Hall of the museum is all about dinosaurs and is packed with fossils and other dinosaur-related items.

The Natural Heritage Center was established to help the locals to learn about the value and importance of natural heritages through exhibitions and education on the methodical study of natural heritages and national monuments. Fossils(i.e. dinosaurs’ eggs and footprint), animal specimens (eagles, asiatic black bear), botanical specimens (i.e. jondo-ri pine tree) and many other natural heritages are exhibited.

unsan Prehistoric Site is still mildly entertaining if you’re in the area. The site was first investigated in 1991 by the Chungnam National University Museum, where they found quartz scraping tools from the Old Stone Age and at least 15 housing sites from the New Stone Age (3000-2500 BC). The ancient relics are no longer found here, but can presumably be found at the National History Museum of Chungnam National University.

The Daejeon National Cemetery is located in Hyeonchungwon-ro, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. It is South Korea’s second national cemetery after the Seoul National Cemetery and is overseen by the Ministry of Patriots’ and Veterans’ Affairs. The cemetery is reserved for Korean veterans, including those who died in the Korean independence movement, Korean War, Vietnam War and post Korean War clashes with North Korea.

The Daejeon Museum of Art is located near at 396 Mannyeon-dong, Seo-gu, the Expo Park in Daejeon, South Korea. It opened on April 15, 1998. It has featured modern art from both domestic and foreign artists. It also includes an outdoor sculpture park.
